Maps are images of an area, mostly from a birds eye view, so you can see everything; where hills and depressions in the land's surface can be determined by field lines. Maps use a key to indicate certain things you may need to know about (a-hem, visual information/transcript). Maps change in a similar way to flags. Boarders are more theoretical then physical in most cases where you suddenly just ARE in some one else's territory, I once got a cabby from Argentina to Brazil. It was over a bridge but was really odd. You could just look over your shoulder and say "Argentina?" and look forward and say "Brazil?" but it might not always be like that.
